My Worst Hand

This is a tale of great gloom and despair, laden with woe and regret. It is so terrible, you may need to avert your eyes. Cause it's like Medussa, just gazing at it may turn you to stone. But you can't help yourself. You HAVE TO LOOK. You're hypnotized by the sheer, unfathomable horror of it.

You've been warned.

... And her name was Yanisa ...

THE HAND

I had it all wrapped up. I wasn't worried about the score! I knew every card in her hand and she could not win.

She had taken my Queen of hearts and King of diamonds discards, as well as a four that I knew had to be for three fours. I was worried for a while, but things started looking up pretty darn quick. I drew a queen of spades and the fourth hour. Then it happened! She discarded the ten of hearts. If she didn't have J - Q - K of hearts, she HAD TO HAVE three queens. And if she had three queens, she couldn't have diamonds. I knew every card in her hand. Three kings, three queens, and three fours, plus an odd ace or whatever.

I had a pretty good chance of drawing the fourth king and keeping her from ginning, or even undercutting her if she knocked. Even better -- I could not lose the game on this hand. I was under the count. But she very definitely WOULD lose if I scored an undercut.

Then I drew the king of spades. THIS WAS ALMOST TOO GOOD. I had her right where I wanted her. I LAUGHED as I contemplated her miserable predicament. I now had all her gin cards AND A CHANCE TO GIN MYSELF with the jack of spades -- which would almost surely come. The game was mine unless the jack of spades heppened to be in the two bottom cards, and Yanisa decided to play right to the end without knocking.

In fact, it was exactly 25 to 1 that in a few minutes, the old calc_guy could put another notch on his belt. I started practicing playing the humble winner. Good game, yanisa ... I was really very lucky ...

Ten cards left. I drew the Jack of diamonds. No surprise there. Confirmation that my reading of the hand had been right all along.

I discard the jack of diamonds. The King of spades had put me over he count, but what did I care?? I KNEW she couldn't gin the hand and go out.

What do you suppose appears on my screen: Gin.

GIN!?!?!? No, that can't be right. Must be LINE NOISE. I've heard stories about things like this. Some bits got garbled on the internet and happened to make it through the 32 bit check sum. She didn't have gin!

But there it was. 4S 4D 4H TD JD QD KD JH QH KH. Her discard was the King of clubs. The Queen of clubs was down there amongst the last ten cards.

She had speculated on the queen of hearts apparantly. Maybe the King of diamonds as well. At the time she threw the Ten of hearts, I guess her heart run hadn't developed yet. Or maybe she deliberately threw the ten of hearts just to torment and confuse me.

Then she sat there. With AT LEAST FORTY ODD POINTS in her hand, pick after pick after .... I could have won the game just by knocking way back on the sixth or seventh turn.

I don't know how. But somehow that girl has my number.

What a greta story. It was so good that it should have had my name on it. It happens a bit too often but that's what the game is all about. Your story is touching, been there and done that, but it doesn't beat those hands against you that are 2nd card gins.

TOO MANY-----NIGHTMARES----especially when you're way ahead and 2 hit you in a row when you've been dealt predominently picture cards.

Now that's a story!!!

The Motto is, 'There is nothing like the truth'

What a neat story! lol

The sad thing is that IT'S TRUE. And I played her again. She won 2 out of 3.

Rampage, I've been thinking that game theory actually allows your idea that different players don't mix. You can have three different strategies (S1 S2 and S3) that aren't transitive. Ie. S1 beats S2, S2 beats S3, YET S3 beats S1! The solution is a game matrix where you choose S1, S2 or S3 randomly in some proportion set by the nature of the game.

So maybe gin is more a game matrix than I always thought! Or on a deeper level. Maybe it's optimal to go for undercut 10% of the time, or gin 15% of time, just 'to keep your opponent guessing' like you said.

I'll let you know when I figure it out ...

10 AND KNOCK

Like my former name. Get to 10 and knock. Sure I get undercut a lot but I win more from knocking than I lose from getting undercut. So all the players that pick up those high cards that don't play, I love you. And there are a lot of people who pick up cards that don't play. May work for them in gin only and oki, but just doesn't play in reg gin.

I can play gin only and oki but from my experience reg gin is the most skilled game.
My reason being in gin only and oki you can sit and have to wait for 1 card that is card 51 or 52 or your opponent has.

Happy Ginning
whoops I mean happy knocking.

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!. According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!).   The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
