Based on all the lip-service about slow-play, I've noticed MAIN-ROOM players setting the time to the lowest level of 1 minute. I think this is great except for the fact that these are the players that seem to feel obliged to use the entire minute or better part thereof.
Okay, 5 minutes is ridiculous and so is anything more than 30 seconds. I'm willing to bet that if a poll was taken targeted at determining the actual time taken to make a move in GC Gin that number would be less than 15 seconds. If this is valid, why doesn't GC set the default time at 30 seconds or at least one minute. Also give the option for a 15 second limit. I know this is extreme but what about setting that default and offering more time to those players that feel they need more time.
This way, we can always tell what the player is all about before investing half and hour top play for 100pts for tix and no-tix.
What are your thoughts about this?

Well Ed, if we went by your reasoning I suppose I would have to quit playing. You know, and I hope anyone that plays me often knows, that I make fast moves of much less than 15 seconds When I CAN. If DSL or cable were available to me I would have it in a flash, but it isn't, so I am plagued at times with whatever causes slow moves out of my control. I've done everything I can to eliminate the problem...I have a high tech computer and added an accelerator to my internet service (which does help), but I cannot completely solve the problem.
Thank goodness it isn't a constant thing, but I know I'm not the only one that has this to deal with. I can be patient usually when I run up against others making slow moves, because I know at times they can't do anything about it. I'm very aware that there are those players that DO take forever to play even when their net delay looks good, but who am I to judge. They may have reasons too.
I love a fast game too...the kind where the cards FLY...and usually that's the way I play, when I CAN.

You, above all others, know what I'm talking about. I have no problem with slow connections but when one move takes 3 seconds, then 15 sec and then 30 secs and the only time the moves are fast are when your opponent has a winning had.
I just noticed that the TIME Options given by GC are 1min, 2min, 3min, 5min, 7 min and 10 minutes. Come on, this is the high-speed computer age. I've played you dozens of times and the one time you were slow you lost connection. I'm not criticizing 15 second play but 30 seconds a move? You know the people I mean, and, if I'm not mistaken, you've had the very same complaint.
The next time I come across a player with this problem, I guess I'll just have to take the same time making a move as he or she does.
BTW, remember those tourneys for 150 pts lasting almost 2 hours with 6 players? If you don't I'm certain Spider does.
Nothing personal but lets be realistic

RIGHT ON TARGET......if you want to play so let your opponent know it before the match starts. If you want to play slow DO NOT set the time limit to 1 MINUTE. The latter is a major peive of mine.
Thanks for your reply

I'm not arguing with you..I know whereof you speak and I'm sure I've fussed at one time or the other depending on my mood of the day.
I was just a tad paranoid about the 'slow play' talk because I'm always so embarrassed if I feel someone thinks I'm doing it on purpose. I wouldn't do that, but not everyone knows me that well.
Why in the world would you sink to the level of playing slow on purpose...just to get even? Not me...I'll play as fast as I can WHEN I CAN!
Do you never get lag? That's a whole nother subject. I always check the network delay and sometimes it's bad for both sides, but my opponent always seems to think it's me.
Let's try to enjoy the games on this wonderful site. Takes some patience at times, but I think it's worth it.

Time Limits Posted by quietime4me (Registered) 03 Sep 2004 01:19 PM email it to a friend
Under the topic of Noticed Something Funny...It wasn't too long ago that you could shorten the time to less than a minute per move. GameColony stated that this wasn't long enough for some players and it caused those players to lose the game because of time limits. I have two suggestions on this matter. The first is the players who don't have DSL or high speed internet shouldn't join a table that has a low time, which brings me to my second suggestion. I think that when the box comes up that states you have been invited it should show what the time limit is at that table.
I'm sure most of us don't mind playing the players that have slow internet and understand this problem. It is the players who use the time to wait on customers, get something to eat, talk on the phone, whatever.
Another interesting problem that I'm sure everyone has had is the players who play along quickly and everything is going good, you ask for another game and they agree, hit start then the message BRB.

You and I know each other well enough to be very frank. The first thing I do when I notice slow play is the NETWORK DELAY. If it happens to say TRYING, which it sometimes does, I have no problem waiting as long as it takes. When the connection is just about perfect and my opponent intentionally slows down; that's when I begin to suspect foul play or a fowl odor.
I usually don't have lag time since I'm in large cities in both of my homes. I do get cut out of the connect quite often but I'm able to get back within a minute of so. If I have to reboot, it takes a bit longer but I'm always back within a few minutes. You can attest to that.
As far as your play is concerned, your comment is laughable. You move right along and if you do hesitate its because of a potential disaster that you'll probably avoid. Earlier this evening, during the 11PM HR tourney, I finished 2 matches of 200pts OKIE with 11 minutes. You were the TD so you know I'm telling the truth. The third match didn't last much longer.....that's because I didn't want you to lose any sleep.
I am a fast player and I do tolerate any speed of play once. If I feel play is intentionally slow I say so after the match.
I know you and I are on the same wavelength. The SLOW-PLAY issue has been raised by me again because of recent information of being able to set faster speeds on the setup. These are the most laughable issues. A slow player should not set the time at 1 minute....that is the point of this posting....

I have no idea why a slow player sets for 1 minute ... I never do because of my potential problem which I can do nothing about when it happens. I also get LAG often and am very envious of those that don't experience it. I know others do, because in checking the net delay it's obvious.
Those HR games you spoke of from last night were awesome. When you are a fast player and the dealer is generous that can happen, but I almost felt sorry for your opponents. Glad I was hosting and not playing that one! ROFL You just can't beat the deal at times, but then we both know that.
PS ..thanks for the consideration ...I WAS very sleepy.

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!.
According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!). The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
