I've posted on this before cp ...it is very irritating. Of course you can check the away status on the list, but if you do that and they AREN'T away then you usually miss the chance to play because someone else hops on.

I realize there are those that get busy and forget they put themselves on 'away' at a table, but I think for the most part it's done when they get ready to leave and plan on coming back at some point to a table already made. THIS is what I object to. The 'away' is very useful, but I only use it in the lobby, not at the table.

You hit the nail on the head

well said cp. It is common courtesy to close your table when you are away. Perhaps there should be a time limit for inactivity placed on an unused table.

Always assuming discourtesy is inaccurate...

There's actually a timer on such unclosed tables with 'away' status -- such table should be auto-closed in about 2 hours.
Always assuming discourtesy on the part of the 'away' player is inaccurate in this case.
Imagine any situation where a player must leave the play asap -- or the player is dragged away by boss/wife/kids/phone -- you name it.
Politely closing the table just before that may not be possible or may not be courteous to whoever is dragging a player away from the computer.
Another possibility -- the player while waiting at the table switched to another program or is chatting with someone unaware that his/her status was changed to 'away' after inactivity. Such player should be -- within seconds -- alerted (via a ring sound) that someone is joining the table if the ring is not drowned out by other noise...

Another reason....

that it may have npthing to do with discourtesy... A bit of Windows specific coding in the Java implementation makes it impossible for a few of us to create a table. Therefore, when I get a table configured in a way I prefer, I don't want to close it if I plan to be back in a bit... It can be much more frustrating to try to wait for an opportunity to join a table with palatable options than I've ever found it to be to join a table where the occupant is away.

After all, why would you wait ten minutes? When I join a table and it says the occupant is away, I give it 15 or 20 seconds, to see if they might actually be around and respond to the signal, and then go on somewhere else... As webmaster said, there may be many reasons someone may not be available at the moment (whether they show as away or not...)

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!. According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!).   The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
