As you know I often 'out' people who are not in the tournament room at start time. This is the option of the TD and I think very fair to everyone. Sometimes the whole tourney can be held up by just one player who has seen the tourney on the schedule, heard the advertising, joins the tournament and then starts a game in the main room at the time they should be going to the tourney room to be present for the rules.
If a player is 'outted' by the TD before the tournament has started, they get 100% of their entry back and the tournament can proceed much more smoothly than waiting the 10 min. MIA time for one player who may or may not ever come. In these cases the entry fee is not returned until the tourney is completed and the TD requests a refund for this player.
Sometimes the MIA is not the players fault. They may be trying to get into the tournament room and for one reason or another cannot get access. But in many cases it is just not thinking about the delay he/she is causing for ALL the other players.
I am interested in how the Gin players feel about waiting for late and/or non-arrivals in the tournaments. Your opinions DO count and every single one is considered.

I believe the tourney should start on time. If the entrant has PC problems at least he/she will get their entry fee back

Late Arrivals

I think the problem istwo fold. There are some players who don't want to play in tournaments with some other players for various reasons. I also feel that some TD's wait excessively long to close at the posted time in order to get more people(read more tix) into each tournament. This is done through an elaborate array of hello's and thank you for joinings when in fact all most players want is to play the game. Maybe the powers that be should instruct their TD's to stop with the greetings and get on with the games. Hello's are fine until game time, then its play or pay. If you are not on time you should forfeit the game as well as your tix.

All tourneys are to start on time (by the GC clock on the tourney page), if there are four or more signed up. The exception to this rule is in cases of a very large tourney when the TD may be trying to 'out' those people not present in the room.
hi all .greeting and start the game

I agree with others who said tourney should start on time. Greetings should be done on entry before the exact start time. As soon as the time hits zero the pairings button should be hit. There are some players in backgammon who join after that time and still get in and some TD's even wait a few more minutes which is worse.
There were two tournaments on at the same time, example canasta and backgammon and one had 3 players (canasta) and the other had one (backgammon). With 20 seconds left i entered the canasta as it was sure to play although my preference is backgammon and challenging the top ten. When i checked back in a few seconds after entering the canasta event they still hadn't started the backgammon tourney with 4 players and then 2 more entered including one of the competitors I was trying to catch. Those two players should have been too late and the tourney started about 3 minutes after the start time. Unfair and unjustified.

This has been a sore point since I've joined the GC family years ago. As a TD, I made it a point to do the rules prior to the start time so that the tourney could start on time. The 'late start' seems to be the rule rather than the exception over the past few months.
I am in the bad habit of signing up and getting to the room prior to the start since I like to chat with other players and let all know, if they care, that I am in the tourney.
The point about not wanting to play against ceratin other players is also valid and there are a few that I hate to play against not because they are good but because they are bad. Any player worth his or her salt would want to play the best players available but might run at the sight of the poorer players. I'm not referring to the newer players but you all know the slow ones and the intentional laggers.
This is a question that will never be answered. I often join a tourney at the last minute so that the tourney can run only to find out that 5 players join at 5 after the hour.
I guess this doesn't answer the question but so be it.

Occasionally, while we are checking the list prior to clicking 'Start', a player will sign up. Believe me this split second sign up does happen. So altho it might look like 8 once the button is clicked you suddenly have 9 and the player isn't in the room. Now if I as a TD could fix that I would, but it does happen. They might have one last hand to play in main hall, they may just have to wrap up something in real life, their pc might, can and does fritz due to various number of reasons. Who knows. If we could click on a name and find out if they were still in main hall that would be great but we can't. There are the raraties to being in late. I wish we as TD's had more options but there is only so much we can do. I personally start the clock asap. But sometimes we just can't help it.

I would much prefer that the 'TD' would be about his(her) business of running the tournament than saying hello to me or chit chatting before the tournament begins or at least 1 min. before it begins. As far as players not being in the room, I feel that the software should automatically withdraw them from the tournament and refund their money if they do not enter the room within 2 minutes of the posted start time. I think it is OK to allow TD's to go past start time to at least get a quorum but in the case where there are enough players, it should start immediately and be moved along expeditiously.

Hello, my friends.....as a TD, I just have to add my two cents now... I try to be the best hostess I can, by friendly hellos and small chit chat, and running the rules before the start time. And in my tourneys, everyone knows, when I say it's time to rock and rumble, everyone knows the brackets are coming up and it's time to begin....I have also started saying, the number of players in and all are present....and if they are not present, at time to click the button, they are outted..and guess what happens next?...They aren't late anymore.....and if for some reason, they slip in while 'pushing the start button', the explanation is given after all the other players assignments have been assigned..I don't like outting players....because most can and do arrive while the assignments are being given...but for courteousy to the other players (and the players complaints.)..the rules now have to be enforced. So, all players, please be kind and be on time, good luck and thank you for playing.

Most of you know I was a TD and I also had quite a solid following of great players. I also love to chat with all but the issue is 'start-time' not chat. I always made it a point to run the rules about 5 minutes prior to the start time. The players knew it and they also knew that the tourneys would start on time. My message to those that didn't make the start-time was 'sorry for you being late.'
What I am saying is that the Td does have the power to start every tourney on time and I disagree with one of the very best TD's when he runs the rules at the 'Start-Time'. This invites late joiners and they know they can show up late. What is not understood is that the number of players is critical to you playing objectives. I have stated that I used to join so that tourneys could be run; not enough to start, only to find that when the tourney finally began the 1, now 3 including me, was now 8.
This is wrong and should be stopped. The time clearance for tourneys should be set by GC and a definitive range of 1-2 minutes should be all that's allowed. It might not be a bad idea if GC automatically starts the tourney without TD input so all is fair and equal for all players. The ones that arrive late always seem to be the same people.

When did 'out' become a verb? Is it a little like 'Google'?

If your not registered at the designated second the start button should be hit to prepare the draw. That eliminates late comers from joining. The hellos etc are good after the draw button has been pushed and will encourage earlier entries. Too many people enter after the clock strikes zero. Once registered, computer problems might hold someone up but their ten minutes are counting and should count immediately once the draw button is pushed. Some TD's announce each game slowly and by the time one game is called its now 4 minutes after the start and then they start the MIA clock. It should always start at the same time whether your game has been called or not at the start. All MIA times start the moment the draw is made. Later Mia apply as it does now.
Thank you--How do other players feel?

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!.
According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!). The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
