Thread continued, SLOW PLAYERS!

Ok, as many of you may know, I go through various speeds of play due to my internet connection. I am deployed in Iraq and computers here are public access and get bogged down when there are many of us using them at the same time. I play the fastest I am allowed to, and don't like rude players that speak derogatory of me. Not everyone has been rude about my slow play, and I gladly abort those games if they ask. When someone starts bitching from the beginning about my slow play, without tact then I'll never abort the game, I just tell them to learn patience. Am I wrong? I don't think so. I just treat them how they treat me. As far as Ed stating about lower skilled players, I wish I had his ego. I have a decent record, decent rating (usually) but never consider myself a step above anyone. So anytime Ed wants to judge me for a few games, I welcome the experience. I agree with Tole on most of his points. People should learn patience and then this place would be better!

SO good to hear from one of our defenders of freedom in Iraq!! Thank you for taking the time to express your views.
I wish for you good cards and time to play them... patience and understanding of your situation from your opponents and most of all safety and good health until you return home!!
Your post should put some of the 'problems' that have been discussed here in perspective.
God Speed Andy!

Very interesting comments. I agree with Ed and I also see everyone else's point as well. I get very angry and upset when people play slow. Truthfully, sometimes I think they do it so you'll run out of patience and quit the game thus giving them the tickets and the win. I confess that I have done that...just up and quit because 45 minutes for one game is just ridiculous. But, reading your postings, made me realize that perhaps someone is overseas or something like that. On the other hand, if someone isn't showing a network 'latency' then I don't see why it takes a full minute to both pull a card and then another minute to decide which card to discard. I have certain people I won't play because I know they are slow. I have even gone so far as to ask if they are slow players before I begin the game but of course they won't admit that. I guess everyone is right -- they are entitled to take their time and we are entitled to not play them if they are slow.
I thank you very much for this forum. It makes me stop and think. I get very angry and upset and make stupid comments to people (sometimes in retaliation and other times just because I'm frustrated). Reading what you guys type, I am working on my patience and my anger. So thanks.

Chrysytime, I never wrote anything so that you or anyone else would take sides, agree with me or Ed. I am a Libra, not capable to take sides. My post was not about that. Bear with me and I will try to explain a little better. I too, hate a slow game, more than anything else; my mind blocks and I can’t play but lose and have resigned many where my opponent wouldn’t accept an abort. My post was not about that. What I wrote was that there are many circumstances that affect our play and that we should be more considerate and patient. Of course there are some players who play slow on purpose but I do think it is an insignificant number and not worth the space here. Ignoring them and refusing future games with them is much more effective than posting here and complaining about them. This site has become so diverse; everyone can find whatever they are looking for, but in doing so, we should also do our best to let the others do the same and not try and mold them to our own liking. To allow sufficient time for a potential reconnection, the table time can not be set to less than the 1 min. I think we should accept that and I really don’t see any purpose in going over and over again over that. What I tried to say was that we achieve politeness and fair play and even faster games only by ourselves setting an example and not by being excessively arrogant and criticizing or acting as the supreme judge. The forum is for our problems and fun, it’s where we get to know each other a little better and then realize that the names we play against are very real people. But I hate to see it used as the ‘little black book’ where we report players who we think have wronged us. That is what I saw it turning into and I reacted. This is after all only a game and we should treat it as so.

I would never criticize you for anything since you're putting your life on the line do that I can write in this Forum. I would like to address a few statements you made.
The 'slowplay' issue has been around forever. I have never, except once, asked a player to play faster for my sake and have never openly criticized a player in a match during a match for slow play. The first thing I look at is his/her connectivity that is available on the game screen. If its slow or I see 'trying' instead of a number I just sit back and wait. Andy, I am criticizing intentional slow play which is a strategy used by more players than you think.
The 'rudeness' issue is a general observaytion over the years and it seems to be getting worse. I could care less if someone doesn't say 'Hi' or 'GL' or 'GG'. It's the ones that make indecent comments or use the 'BAN' button that I have a problem with. If I join a table and the opponent doesn't say anything or doesn't hit the start. I always say 'KK', ' 'Thanks' and 'BYE'. Sometimes I even say 'GLIR'
As far as 'ego' is concerned. Come now, we all have ego and I chose to write in the forum for just the type of response that you gave me. I appreciate your input and will look for you to play. When I refer to a lesser skilled player that is just a matter of fact. You have to be brain-dead not to realize someone that consistantly makes foolish draws and discards. That is part of the game. I am only stating fact. m If you read that as ego it's okay to as long as you respond. Communication is the key and especially from one of America's finest.
God's speed and I hope to see you in GC.

I can't even begin to count the number of matches uou and I have played and its always a pleasure. The slow play thing I'm referring to is 'Intentional Slow Play' not computer connetivity problems. One of the very best players and TD's on GC lives in the woods and has no cable or dsl available to her yet she is as fast at anyone I've played. I agree, there are sometimes when I note slowdowns but I know its not intentional and I would never comment about it.
My suggestion is to check that connectivity box in the gameroom to see if you opponent is connected and if their speed is slow. If its as fast as yours, that's intentional slow play and that's what I have a problem with.
Alway my pleasure

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!.
According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!). The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
