Broadband or Dial-up?

To the Moderators,

When viewing a player's bio before starting game, when looking at connection speed, is there a way to tell if player has broadband or dial-up?

Maybe this is a stupid question, I just was wondering.....

Net Delays

The players can only see the so called 'Net Delay' -- the time it takes for an information packet to go between the player's computer and the server.
Net Delay time usually varies, so closing and reopening the same player information dialog usually produces a different result for Net Delay each time.
Consistent Net Delays in the area of 0.15 sec or less would correspond to Broadband connection.
Good dial-up connection should have less than 2 seconds Net Delays.

Each player's connection, however, goes through various individual subnetworks - route. At any point in time there can be connection fluctuations at any intermediate subnetwork comprising that individual player's route.

Whether a player has local broadband or dial-up has little to do with the (occasional mis-)behavior of any intermediate subnetworks.

In some cases, good dial-up connection can behave better and be more consistent than a 'bad' Broadband connection:
  • As cable connections (as opposed to DSLs) are shared among large groups of customers, during peak usage times, such connections can occasionally slow down to a crawl.
  • There are some broadband connections with consistently misbehaving routings -- in need of ISP adjustments
  • There are also broadband connections coming from countries (or through areas) with inadequate network infrastructures

See slow connections?

Jag, so...we could then choose who we want to play? But...I am on a cable connection, and here in my country, that 'extra fast' connection is slower than some of the dial-ups elsewhere. Also, if I don't clean the 'cookie box' every other game or so, I slow up bad, even though it shows that my connection is good. It depends also, on how much my browser is busy. Though we would know who is 'supposed' to have a better connection, it will not be so reliable.<

Sounds like there is no real easy solution. Perhaps, we should just keep a box of oreos nearby to occupy ourselves during slow wait times

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!. According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!).   The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
