Quality Game - New Thread

I promised to stop writing but I just couldn't let this one go without comment.

I just finished a match with who could be the very best player on GC; not my opinion alone. I opened a table 125_Reg_10Tix_LD and invited him to play. He is definitely a player that's worth playing just to get the experience and learn his style of play. He joined me and we exchanged greetings.

As usual he jumped into an early lead with a quick knock but was still in reach. I countered with two wins, both under-cutting him, and he retaliated by doing the same to me. The game was close and could have gone either way. I enjoyed using the 'tricks' I learned from him to trap him, or so I thought.

He won the match and hit the 'ABORT' key before the 'Continue Key'. I had already hit the 'Continue' key acknowledging his win but he hit the abort key again and once again I replied no. The third time I did this I sort of knew he wasn't going to give up. I thanked him and commented on him being the consumate gentleman he always is.

I thought he would leave the room. Instead he stated 'That was practice' and hit the 'New Game' key. I sent him the message 'lol' and accepted. I hit start and he followed and before I could make a move he resigned giving me the win.

I smiled and read his comment; 'Gotcha'. I replied and he just wrote one short note; 'Don't speculate' followed by a 'Bye'.

I got the win and the 10 tix but the point is that this is exactly what I was trying to bring across in my last thread. The quality of the games are really getting better and the better players are doing just what you'd expect from a professional, they're teaching the rest of us how to play the game properly.

I'm not permitted to release his name and I sincerely hope he reads this posting.

In my humble opinion, this is what GC is all about and that's a real good thing.

It's the good players who make this site what it is and that doesn't infer a good game.

This particular player always critiqued my games and I listened. He always said he was sorry for speaking out but he taught me an awful lot about the game.

There was one other player and I call her 'my teacher.' Over a period of a month or so she would also critique my game until I started beating her. We will always be good friends but I will always appreciate her input. By the way, I have no idea where the woman lives but I do believe I know where the male teacher lives and he is truly one of a kind.

Ed, don't give in and stop writing your opinions and thoughts. You're just feeding into what specific people want. You are not always correct but you do give people food for thought. If you were offending people, GC wouldn't post your writings. They are quite clear on what they will and will not post. I for one, enjoy reading the forum and sometimes I respond and most times I do not. Take care and keep on writing.

Thanks for your good thoughts. I all players were like you there wouldn't be a need to chat about these subjects. Sadly that's not the case. I don't feel I write 'just to see myself in print' since I really don't need that accolade. I try to discuss points that affect quite a few of us and would like to give those of us that experience these things, good and bad, to know that they're not alone.

I understand that there are some, I should say most, that don't prefer to write in public but your statement about GC is right on point. The key is not to direct your thoughts at any one given player and not to be so negative as to abuse the privelege of using the Forum.

I do take issue with all the readers of the Forum that choose not to participate. This is the one place we can interact with each other for or against any given issue or topic.

This thread is about he increased quality of play that is very apparent to me. There is nothing magical in this thought and it is intended to show the better players that they are appreciated. At the same time I'm trying to tell the vast 'other' group to use their play on GC as a learning tool. I learn from most of the players I face, not all, but most. If I feel I'm wasting my time I'll just stop playing with specific players since that is my right.

I enjoy lower rated players challenging me since I don't play for ranking, ladder position and can very well afford to lose. I'll stick with a lesser skilled player if I see their game improving while playing against me. Believe it or not I enjoy that.

What will stop me from writing in this Forum is a lack of response from players like you or anyone that opposes me other than the same people all the time. What I'm trying to say is that I have no ill feelings against the other players when they speak out against me. Yup, I'd love to play them to see if there's any substance behind their accusations. That would be fun except they seem to avoid me on the Main Room whenever they can.

Such is my story. I will continue to write as long as people respond in kind. When it stops, I stop. As simple as that.

As usual, thanks Chrisy, you are one of the players I enjoy playing with; gin that is. lol

I've been on a hot streak and have been playing consistantly well other the past few weeks. I'm saying this not for bravado but to tell a very quick story I think most of you will enjoy.

During the 10:30 HR tourney, I got through the first two matches with realtive ease. There were 8 playerfs in at $50 tix each.

I sincerely thought the third match was for the championship. This particular player seems to use slow play as a strategy. Knowing this in advance I expect it and it really doesn't bother my game. Each move gets methodically slower as the game progresses and he feels the threat of losing. We got to a score of 199-197 and I won the match. This match lasted three times longer than my first two combined.

When I returned to the tourney room I was waiting for my WTG but instead some said 'Hi Ed, its me.' I was shocked and actually thought it was a joke but I had one more match to play for the championship. That's right, it was one of the top two players I've been talking about with a disguised name. I smiled and gladly played with the player that's become a great teacher for me.

He grabbed me on the first hand for 47 points, or something like that. I then ran up a lead of 157-43. It didn't take him too long to take the lead back from me. This man is good, real good. The score before the last hand was 163:167; he had the 167. It had become a great match and one that could have gone either way. At that time I knew that if I won I would split the tix with him and just take the win. Remember, he is that gentleman I was chatting about the other day.

He knocked. I smiled, looked for a way out but he caught me early. He won and then commented, 'You could have laid off a card against me but you missed it. You could still have been in the game.' OMG, as usual he was right and the card was the 9D. So be it the match was over.

He donated his winnings to the Katrina Fund in GC and I would have done the same thing but didn't because I have already contributed a sizeable amount locally.

The moral of the story is that not only did my worthy opponent win the match, he also won the respect of me and the TD who is also a very generous person.

Sorry of I bored you with the tale but I thought it had to be told.

At GameColony.com you can play games of skill only -- play for free or play for $prizes!. According to the statutes of most states in the United States, gambling is defined as: "risking something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance". (Also see No Gambling!).   The skill (as opposed to chance) is predominant in games of skill. Playing games of skill for $prizes, therefore, has nothing to do with gambling as it is not a contest of chance -- the more skillful player will win far more often. The chance element of a 'gamble' is either insignificant or missing. When players compete in tournaments or games of skill for $prizes -- it is "competitive entertainment" rather then "gambling". The more skilled winner will always win more matches, tournaments and $prizes.
