For My Chess Friends...on this day in history Posted by PEGASUS (moderator) Jan 2 2007 11:23PM On January 2... Bobby Fischer was born in 1943, and at the age of 15 and a half he became the youngest international grandmaster chess champion. He successfully defended that title on this day in 1960. In 1972 he became the first American to win the official world chess championship by defeating Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. The title was later taken from Fischer after he refused to defend his title. That was the last time Fischer ever played a tournament game. In 1992 however, he did play and defeat Spassky again in an exhibition game. In 1969 Fischer wrote the autobiographical book My Sixty Most Memorable Games which is considered a chess classic. |
