Punxsutawney Phil Posted by PEGASUS (moderator) Feb 2 2007 5:28PM On February 2... On this day in 1886 Groundhog Day was first celebrated in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Several countries had beliefs similar to the tradition of a groundhog predicting the end of winter on February 2. German settlers brought the tradition called Candlemas Day that occurred on February 2, because it was the day in between the first day of winter and spring. During Candlemas if the day was sunny, winter would be another six weeks. If the day were overcast, there would be an early spring. Other traditions used animals such as bears and badgers, but Pennsylvania decided on the groundhog, and the tradition has stuck. |
