THE USE OF WILDS IN COUNTING TOWARDS THE INITIAL MELD POINTS

The game I learned as a 10 year old was 5000-2-0-2 and did not permit the wild card points to count towards the initial meld. Was this just my family's household rule?

HI I have heard of variations where the top discard you are picking up cannot constitute a value in the initial meld, but never wild cards. it would be very difficult if playing 4 people to get to a 120 meld without wild cards given only have 11 cards and you can only pick up one (NOT two) card and discard one each turn.
